Nature and Wilderness as Recreational Resources, c.1850-1920:
Additional Resources in the Library of Congress

The Library of Congress's General Collection and Rare Book and Special Collections Division include extensive holdings in the many-sided literature of nature- and wilderness-based recreation, including tourism, camping and woodcraft, that burgeoned as urbanization and industrialization were transforming the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and contributed to the development of the American conservation movement. After consulting works included in the Conservation Collection, readers who have direct access to the Library, or to other major research libraries, might wish to look at titles such as those on the list below. It should be noted, however, that materials specifically on sport hunting and fishing, especially in relation to conservationism, have been included on another Additional Resources list, "Sportsmen and Conservationism, c.1850-1920." In addition to the materials on that list, readers might also wish to consult some of the titles on two other Additional Resources lists, "Scenic and Wilderness Travel Literature, c.1850-1920", and "Popular Ornithology, c.1850-1920."
