1910 Big 4 "30" Tractor
The Big 4 "30" was manufactured by the Gas Traction Company of Minneapolis,
Minnesota, from 1908 to 1912. After the Gas Traction Co. was purchased by Emerson-Brantingham Implement Company in 1912, the Big 4 "30" continued to be manufactured without any modifications until 1916. It featured a 6 1/2 x 8 inch 4-cylinder
engine, with cylinders
and heads cast singularly. Normal engine operating speed was 650 rpm,
and it developed 30 horsepower on the drawbar and 60 horsepower on
the belt. The tractor weighed 22,725 pounds, stood approximately
11 feet tall (to the top of the canopy), and was over 9 feet wide and
21 feet long. Maximum speed was 2.22 mph in the field
and 3.33 mph on the road. Some other advanced features were a Schebler
vaporizing carburetor, a modern closed cooling system, high-tension
Remy magneto, and forced lubrication. In 1916, the tractor sold for
the substantial price of $2,800.
