Chronology of Field Trip Courses: 1898-1934

1901-1905

July 1901

Dr. H. C. Cowles of the University of Chicago will conduct a field party during August in northwestern Montana. The party will number about twenty and the work will be along ecological lines. Most of the work will be in the neighborhood of Flathead Lake where the state biological station is located.

Botany 36: Field Ecology

In the summer of 1901 this course will be given in the West, probably in Montana. This course may be given in Florida in the winter of 1902

Botany 34: Physiographic Ecology
Origin, development, and death of the various plant societies, especially such as are found in the United States and Canada. Field work.

In the summer of 1902 this course is offered in the east by Dr. Cowles and in the west by Mr. Whitford. Dr. Cowles will conduct a party to Mt. Katahdin and the Maine coast starting August 12; Mr. Whitford will conduct a party to the Rocky mountain district of Montana, starting about August 1. These parties will spend about 4 weeks in the field

In the latter part of March Professor C. B. Davenport and Dr. H. C. Cowles of the University of Chicago conducted a part of students to the gulf coast of Mississippi

Dr. Henry C. Cowles with a party of fourteen has been studying the climatic and edaphic influences on the flora of Mt. Katahdin, Maine....a large number of plants and photographs were collected...

March 1904

Dr. H. C. Cowles of the University of Chicago has been sent by the department of botany to investigate the Everglade region of Florida using the U. S. Subtropical Laboratory at Miami as a base of operations.

August 1905

Professor John M. Coulter and Dr. H. C. Cowles will spend the autumn and winter in Europe returning to their duties at the University of Chicago April 1, 1906.
