Some of the boys would be considered "homeless" by today's definition. For example,
the story is told that, after a caretaker forgot to lock the door of the Civic Opera
House one winter evening, newsboys and other needy people discovered the opening
and took refuge for the night in the box seats of the grand theater. Social service
organizations often pointed to newsboys as one of the most visible examples of the
type of youth who might get into trouble without their guidance. Charities sometimes
sponsored events aimed especially at helping newsboys (DN-0000265, DN-0000263, DN-0000266,
