The photographers of the Chicago Daily News worked with big box cameras that had relatively slow shutter speed and consequently had difficulty capturing scenes of moving figures (SDN-053614). Therefore, many photographs in the collection show individual players from local and or visiting teams holding a football or striking other poses. Other photographs show practice scenes (SDN-069030) and groups of players posed sitting or standing together, such as these teams from the University of Minnesota in 1903 (SDN-002123) and the University of Michigan in 1905 (SDN-004380).
