Perhaps the best known American Indian athletes during the early twentieth century were the football players from Carlisle
Indian School in Pennsylvania, near the U.S. Army's Carlisle Barracks (SDN-006100). The Carlisle "Indians" were known
as one of the most outstanding football teams in the country year after year (SDN-053606, SDN-53607, SDN-053620,
SDN-053613, SDN-060042). Players included Jim Thorpe, later famed as a track and field star at the Olympics (SDN-53622).
When the Carlisle team played the University of Chicago in 1907, the stands were packed with fans (SDN-006126, SDN-053602).
