What Is Resiliency?
Task Card
Clementine

Journal Write and Share: Think about someone you know that seems to always bounce back no matter what the obstacles might be. What personal qualities help the person be resilient?

Resilience
All human beings have the inborn ability to bounce back successfully in spite of life's obstacles.

  1. Directions: Sing and listen to the song, Clementine. Use Resource Card A.

  2. Discuss the following questions with your group:
    • From whose viewpoint are we seeing or reading or hearing?
    • How do you know?
    • What does this song mean to you? What story does the song tell?
    • In the song, who demonstrates resilience (or not)? What is the evidence to support your ideas? Does the miner in Clementine show resilience?

  3. Complete the Document Analysis Worksheet for the sheet music.
  4. Prepare a Cinquain that demonstrates the resilient traits of an individual miner or his daughter.
