African-American Odyssey Activity

Go to the African-American Odyssey exhibit in American Memory.

  1. Choose a section of the exhibit to investigate.

  2. Look at many of the items in your section (note: sections have several parts to them).

  3. After viewing the items, choose five items that best represent your era in African American history.

  4. Select the item that you found most interesting and print it out. (You may want to read the analysis/discuss questions below.) Click on the thumbnail image to get a larger version before printing.
  5. Answer these questions:
    • What do you see in this item? Use objective and subjective observation.

       

    • What does this item tell you about the treatment of African Americans in our country?

       

    • How has this event shaped thought about African Americans throughout our history?

       

    • How does this make you feel about the treatment of African Americans in our country?

       

  6. Present your findings to the group. Include thoughts about how your students might react to the same item.
