American Memory

The examples from collections used in this workshop do not require special software to be seen or read. However, some collections contain sound recordings, films, additional high-resolution images, and text with enhanced navigation. Just as you need special players to play videotapes, cassettes, or CDs at home, you need special viewers to see and hear these historical materials. For information on what viewers are needed, go to American Memory Viewer Information: Viewing and Listening to American Memory Collections.

Discussions

During facilitated workshop sessions, the discussion area of this workshop allows participants to interact with each other and Library staff about their findings, opinions, and questions about searching the American Memory collections. The discussion area lets participants post messages and respond to the postings of others. Discussion topics are on the Course Activities page and on the related activity pages. For example, after finishing Exloring Options participants can post comments in the discussion, "What to Use When?"

Log In and Passwords

There are two ways to gain access to the discussions:

  1. Click on the discussion link in the menu bar at the side of the page. This will take you to the discussion area. Click on the "Log In" button. You will see a form that asks you to enter your assigned log-in name and password. Click the "log in" button again. You will then see the list of discussions. Click on the discussion you wish to enter.

  2. You can also enter a discussion from links in the activity page. When you click on the hyperlinked discussion name, you will be prompted to log in. Once you have entered your information, press the button again and you will be admitted to the discussion.

Each time you return to the discussions in subsequent sessions you will be asked to log in with your user name and password.

Posting Messages

To add a message to the discussion just type your message into the box form. There is no need to know HTML. However, if you wish to use special formatting such as italics or bold, click on the "quick edit help" link that appears above the message box. You can find the information on formatting there. Once you have posted your message you are given an opportunity to either edit or delete it.

Technical Help Discussion

If you have any technical questions, for example, how to use the plug-ins for various American Memory collections or how to enter links into your discussion messages, please post your message in the Technical Help discussion area. Other participants may have the same question.
