In 1942, John F. Kennedy entered the U.S. Navy. In
September of that year, he wrote the letter below, from
Words and Deeds in American
History, to Clare Boothe Luce, a Republican member of the House of Representatives and
wife of the prominent publisher Henry Luce. Although the letter was written 18 years
before he was elected president, it reveals some interesting things about young Lieutenant
Kennedy. What inferences can you draw from the letter about Kennedy's personality?
His religious beliefs? His family background? Would these factors be advantages or
disadvantages in running for president?
