The Legacy of French Canadian Immigrants in New England

Day Six and Seven
Dummond Family

On Day Six, conduct a class discussion:

  • In the portrait of French Canadians which emerges from the American Life Histories (self-portrayals) and the Nineteenth Century Periodicals (journalists' reports), do areas of commonality emerge?
  • Do contradictions come to light?
  • Do patterns emerge (is there anything that you see over and over again)?
  • Are there any conclusions to be drawn from these commonalities, contradictions, and/or patterns?

On Day Seven, students will participate in a photo analysis of depression era photographs.

  • Model one photograph using the Photo Analysis Guide and the Photo Analysis Questions.
  • Student partners will research/select photos, print one, analyze it and find elements characteristic of the French Canadian immigrant experience. (There is a prepared list of 15 choices to expedite this activity included in the Photo Analysis Guide.)
