The Library of Congress
In this lesson, we ask you to read and analyze a series of primary source documents which capture the experiences of women from different backgrounds in the Civil War. The documents include diaries, handbills, photographs, official publications, and ephemera. The document sets are grouped around the experiences of southern, northern, and slave women as well as those who worked as spies or soldiers. It is important to expand the historical record by including the voices of women in our studies of the Civil War since they played such a vital role in the conflict.
