One successful way to search American Life Histories, 1936-1940 is using occupations and names of places people have worked.

You have seen an example that was found using the search term circus. Experiment with some of the following occupation terms or use your own:

astronomer blacksmith bricklayer butcher cowboy
dancer fisherman handyman laundress longshoreman
midwife pianist pirate robber seamstress
servant slave surveyor teacher undertaker
waiter writer      

 

Another area to look for is places people work. Experiment with some of the following terms or use your own.

army grocery mine night club packinghouse
plantation railroad ranch sawmill textile mill
