The following messages were received from the President of the United States, by Mr. Porter, his secretary:

I hereby nominate Edwin S. McCook to be secretary of Dakota Territory, vice George A. Batchelder, resigned.

I nominate Henry A. Bruner to be deputy postmaster at Albion, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, in place of Joseph M. Cornell.

I nominate Thomas B. Catron to be attorney of the United States for the Territory of New Mexico, in place of Singleton M. Ashenfelter, removed for cause.

I nominate Hiland R. Hurlburd to be Comptroller of the Currency, reappointed under the provisions of the act of Congress approved February 23, 1863, his trim of service expiring by limitation February 6, 1872.

Ordered, That the nomination of Edwin S. McCook be referred to the Committee on Territories.
Ordered, That the nomination of Henry A. Bruner be referred to the Committee on Post-Offices and Post-Roads.
Ordered, That the nomination of Thomas B. Catron be referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.
Ordered, That the nomination of Hiland R. Hurlburd be referred to the Committee on Finance.
Mr. Chandler, from the Committee on Commerce, to whom were referred, the 7th December last, the nomination of William T. Haines, and, the 1st instant, the nomination of George Gage, reported favorably thereon.
Mr. Wright, from the Committee on Finance, to whom was referred, the 5th instant, the nomination of James P. Taggart, reported favorably thereon.

Mr. Ramsey, from the Committee on Post-Offices and Post-Roads, to whom were referred, the 11th December last, the nomination of J. W. McCullough, and, the 5th instant, the nomination of S. Card, reported the former without recommendation and the latter favorably.
Mr. Kellogg, from the Committee on Commerce, to whom was referred, the 14th December last, the nomination of Eugene Biondi, reported favorably thereon.
Mr. Sherman, from the Committee on Finance, to whom was referred this day the nomination of Hiland R. Hurlburd, reported favorably thereon.
On motion by Mr. Sherman,
The Senate proceeded, by unanimous consent, to consider the said nomination; and
Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of Hiland R. Hurlburd, agreeably to the nomination.
On motion by Mr. Edmunds,
Ordered, That the nominations of David H. Vinton and other named officers of the Quartermaster's Department, together with the opinion of the Attorney-General accompanying the same, be referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.
On motion by Mr. Cameron,
The Senate proceeded, by unanimous consent, to consider the nomination of William T. Haines; and
Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to his appointment, agreeably to the nomination.
On motion by Mr. Logan,
The Senate proceeded, by unanimous consent, to consider the nomination of James P. Taggart; and
Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to his appointment, agreeably to the nomination.
The Senate proceeded, by unanimous consent, to consider the nominations of George Gage, S. Card, and Eugene Biondi; and
Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of the said persons, agreeably to their nominations, respectively.
On motion by Mr. Pomeroy,
The Senate proceeded to consider the motion, submitted by Mr. Sumner the 1st instant, that the Senate reconsider its resolution of the 26th of January, advising and consenting to the appointment of James F. Legate to be governor of Washington Territory.
After debate,
On motion by Mr. Cole, at 5 o'clock p. m.,
The doors were opened, and
The Senate adjourned.
