The following messages were received from the President of the United States, by Mr. Walker, his secretary:
To the Senate of the United States:
I nominate Abraham V. E. Hotchkiss to be deputy postmaster at Lewiston, in the State of New York, his commissions for the year ending the 30th June, 1848, exceeding one thousand dollars.

To the Senate of the United States:
Agreeably to the recommendation of the Secretary of War herewith, I nominate the following officers for brevet promotion to the grades set opposite to their names respectively, as recommended by the Secretary of War:

Sir: I find, on examining the list of nominations for brevet promotion, that the name of Captain Wood, of the 12th infantry, has been accidentally omitted. I therefore respectfully recommend that Captain Allen Wood, of the 12th Infantry, be nominated to be major by brevet for gallant and meritorious conduct in the battles of Contreras and Churubusco, Mexico, to date from the 20th of August, 1847.
I also recommend that Second Lieutenant Henry Almstedt, of the 12th Infantry, be nominated to be first lieutenant by brevet for gallant and meritorious conduct in the same battles, to date from the 20th of August, 1847.
