The following messages were received from the President of the United States, by Mr. Van Buren, his secretary:

I nominate to the Senate Benjamin B. French to be a justice of the peace for the county of Washington, in the District of Columbia.

Gentlemen of the Senate:

I nominate, for your advice and consent, George Rathbun to be deputy postmaster at Auburn, in the State of New York, in place of Hiram Bostwick, whose appointment will expire on the 2d July, 1840.

I also nominate Joseph W. Manson to be deputy postmaster at Lowell, Massachusetts, in the place of E. Case, whose appointment will expire on the 2d of July.

To the Senate of the United States:

I nominate William Leigh, now a passed midshipman, to be a lieutenant in the Navy, from the 30th of May, 1840, to fill a vacancy occasioned by the death of Lieutenant John Weems.

Samuel Larkin, jr., now a passed midshipman, to be a lieutenant in the Navy, from this date, to fill a vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Lieutenant Owen Burns.

To the Senate:

I nominate John K. Morehead, to be deputy postmaster at Pittsburgh, in Pennsylvania, in the place of David Lynch, whose office expires on the 2d inst.

I nominate also John Schley to be deputy postmaster at Columbus, Georgia, and do hereby withdraw the nomination of Wm. L. Peter for the same place.

On motion by Mr. Hubbard,

The Senate, by unanimous consent, proceeded to consider the nomination of Benjamin B. French.

Whereupon

Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to his appointment, agreeably to the nomination.

On motion by Mr. Lumpkin,

The Senate, by unanimous consent, proceeded to consider the nomination of John Schley.

Whereupon

Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to his appointment, agreeably to the nomination.

Ordered, That the nominations of George Rathbun, Joseph W. Manson, and John K. Morehead be severally referred to the Committee on the Post-Office and Post-Roads.

Ordered, That the nominations of William Leigh and Samuel Larkin be referred to the Committee on Naval Affairs.

Mr. King, from the Committee on Commerce, to whom was referred, on the 23d of June, the nomination of Joseph P. Junkins, reported.

Whereupon

Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to his appointment, agreeably to the nomination.
