Senate Executive Journal --MONDAY, June 29, 1846.
The following messages were received from the President of the United States, by Mr. Walker, his secretary:
To the Senate of the United States:
I nominate Colonel Stephen W. Kearny and Colonel David E. Twiggs, of the Army of the United States, to be brigadier-generals in the Army of the United States, in accordance with the provisions of the act approved June 18, 1846, entitled "An act supplemental to an act entitled 'An act providing for the prosecution of the existing war between the United States and the Republic of Mexico,' and for other purposes."
I also nominate Robert Patterson, of Pennsylvania, to be a major-general, and Thomas L. Hamer, of Ohio, Joseph Lane, of Indiana, James Shields, of Illinois, Thomas Marshall, of Kentucky, Gideon J. Pillow, of Tennessee, and John A. Quitman, of Mississippi, to be brigadier-generals in the military service of the United States, in accordance with the provisions of the act approved June 26, 1846, entitled "An act to provide for the organization of the volunteer forces brought into the service of the United States into brigades and divisions, and for the appointment of the necessary number of general officers to command the same."
I also nominate Charles Ruff, of Missouri, to be captain in the regiment of mounted riflemen, or Third Dragoons, in the place of Bela M. Hughes, who declines to accept the same.

I nominate the persons named in the accompanying list for appointment to the offices set opposite their respective names, in the Adjutant-General's Department, in accordance with the act approved June 18, 1846, entitled "An act supplemental to an act entitled 'An act providing for the prosecution of the existing war between the United States and the Republic of Mexico,' and for other purposes."

In my message of June 25, 1846, I nominated Newton Hill, of Indiana, to be assistant commissary. The true name is Newton Hayden, of Indiana, whom I now nominate to be assistant commissary with the rank of captain, in the place of Newton Hill.

Whereupon
Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to the promotion and appointment of the said persons, agreeably to their nominations respectively.
Mr. Benton, from the Committee on Military Affairs, to whom were referred, on the 19th instant, the nominations of Martin Scott, Randolph B. Marcy, Sterne H. Fowler, and Simon B. Buckner, reported; and,
After debate,
Resolved, That the Senate do not advise and consent to the promotion of the said persons, as stated in their nominations.
Mr. Breese, from the Committee on Public Lands, to whom was referred, on the 26th instant, the nomination of Murdock McIntyre, reported.
Mr. Benton, from the Committee on Military Affairs, to whom was referred, on the 27th instant, the nomination of Zachary Taylor, reported.
The Senate proceeded to consider the said nomination; and
On the question, Will the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of Zachary Taylor?
It was determined in the affirmative, yeas 46.
On motion by Mr. Mangum,

Mr. Benton, from the Committee on Military Affairs, to whom was referred, on the 27th instant, the nomination of William O. Butler, reported.
The Senate proceeded to consider the said nomination; and
On the question, Will the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of William O. Butler?
It was determined in the affirmative, yeas 44.
On motion by Mr. Sevier,

Mr. Upham presented two memorials from citizens of Grand Isle County, in the State of Vermont, praying that the advice and consent of the Senate may not be given to the appointment of Russell G. Hopkinson.
Mr. Benton, from the Committee on Military Affairs, to whom was this day referred the nomination of Newton Hayden, reported.
Whereupon
The Senate, by unanimous consent, proceeded to consider the said nomination; and
Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of Newton Hayden, agreeably to the nomination.
On motion by Mr. Benton,
The Senate proceeded to consider the nomination of Robert H. Hammond; and
Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent, to his appointment, agreeably to the nomination.
On motion by Mr. Fairfield,
The Senate proceeded to consider the nomination of Aristides Welch; and
Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to his appointment, agreeably to the nomination.
On motion by Mr. Cass,
The Senate proceeded to reconsider the vote confirming the nominations of Erastus B. Strong, William T. Burwell, and William Read.
On motion,
The Senate adjourned.
