On motion by Mr. Stewart,
The Senate proceeded, by unanimous consent, to consider the nominations of John Titus to be chief justice of the supreme court of Arizona Territory, and Charles A. Tweed to be an associate justice of the supreme court of the Territory of Arizona, in place of John Titus, promoted; and
Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of the said persons agreeably to their nominations, respectively.
On motion by Mr. Stewart,
Ordered, That the resolution of the Senate advising and consenting to the appointment of John Titus and Charles A. Tweed be transmitted forthwith to the President of the United States.
Mr. Chandler, from the Committee on Commerce, to whom were referred, the 8th December last, the nominations of John W. Dixon, Amos D. Johnson, and David G. Carr, reported favorably thereon.
Mr. Ramsey, from the Committee on Post-Offices and Post-Roads, to whom was referred, the 13th instant, the nomination of Edward B. Stephens, reported favorably thereon.
Mr. Corbett, from the Committee on Commerce, to whom was referred, the 13th instant, the nomination of A. Jourdan, reported favorably thereon.
Mr. Cole, from the Committee on Post-Offices and Post-Roads, to whom was referred, the 8th December last, the nomination of James Coey, reported adversely thereon.
Mr. Cole, from the Committee on Post-Offices and Post-Roads, to whom was referred, the 4th instant, the nomination of Albert J. Lowry, reported favorably thereon.
Mr. Spencer, from the Committee on Commerce, to whom was recommitted, the 6th instant, the nomination of John L. Requa, reported adversely thereon.
Mr. Spencer, from the Committee on Commerce, to whom was referred, the 13th instant, the nomination of Samuel T. Day, reported favorably thereon.
Mr. Trumbull, from the Committee on the Judiciary, to whom was referred, this day, the nomination of George P. Fisher, reported favorably thereon.
The Senate proceeded to consider the nominations of John H. Johnson and John T. C. Clark to be justices of the peace in and for the county of Washington, District of Columbia; and
Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of the said persons, agreeably to their nominations, respectively.
On motion by Mr. Spencer,
The Senate proceeded to consider the nomination of William Miller, jr., to be postmaster at Greenville, Ala.; and
Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to his appointment, agreeably to the nomination.
On motion by Mr. Spencer,
Ordered, That the resolution of the Senate advising and consenting to the appointment of William Miller, jr., be transmitted forthwith to the President of the United States.
The President pro tempore announced that 5 o'clock, the hour fixed by the Senate in legislative session for taking a recess, had arrived;
