The President communicated a letter from Messrs. Gales and Seaton, stating that an application has been made to them, on the part of the Department of State, to furnish that Department with twenty-five copies of the confidential papers printed by an order of the Senate of the 20th instant, and expressing their desire to comply with the same, should it meet the sanction of the Senate. The letter was read; and,

On motion,

Ordered, That the President of the Senate be requested to direct a compliance with the application.

The Senate proceeded to consider the message of the 27th instant, nominating Charles P. McIlvaine to office; and

Resolved, That they advise and consent to the appointment, agreeably to the nomination.

On motion by Mr. Benton,

Ordered, That the message of the President of the United States, of yesterday, transmitting a treaty with the Choctaw Indians, together with the accompanying documents, be printed, in confidence, for the use of the members.

The Senate resumed the consideration of the nomination of Augustus B. Woodward, contained in the message of the 28th of December; and

Ordered, That the further consideration thereof be postponed to Monday next.
