The following messages were received from the President of the United States by Mr. Donelson, his secretary:

To the Senate:

I withdraw the nomination of George Shannon as attorney for the district court of the United States, in Missouri, and nominate in his place Arthur L. Magennis, of that State.

Washington, June 24, 1834.

I nominate to the Senate William Hunter, of Rhode Island, to be chargé des affaires to Brazil, in the place of Ethan A. Brown, resigned.

Richard Pollard, of Virginia, to be chargé des affaires to the Republic of Buenos Ayres, in the place of John Hamm, resigned, and Eben R. Dorr to be consul for Buenos Ayres.

ANDREW JACKSON.

June 24, 1834.

The messages were severally read.

Ordered, That the nomination of Arthur L. Magennis be referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.

Ordered, That the nominations of William Hunter and Richard Pollard be referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations.

Ordered, That the nomination of Eben R. Dorr be referred to the Committee on Commerce.

The Senate proceeded to consider the message nominating Roger B. Taney and Benjamin F. Butler; and

Resolved, That they do advise and consent to the appointment of Benjamin F. Butler, agreeably to the nomination.

On the question, Will the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of Roger B. Taney?

Resolved, That the Senate do advise and consent to the appointment of Horatio M. Houston and Charles G. Hunter, agreeably to the nominations respectively.

The Senate proceeded to consider the message of the 22d May nominating Arthur St. Clair.

Mr. Frelinghuysen presented the memorial of John Ross and others, delegates of the Cherokee Nation of Indians, protesting, for reasons therein set forth, against the ratification of the treaty with a portion of the Creek Indians, now pending before the Senate.

The memorial was read.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee on Indian Affairs.

On motion by Mr. Tyler,

The Senate resumed the consideration of the nomination of Andrew Stevenson; and

On the question. Will the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of Andrew Stevenson?

Resolved, That the Senate do not advise and consent to the appointment of Andrew Stevenson as envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to Great Britain.

Mr. Clay submitted a motion to remove the injunction of secrecy from the proceedings of the Senate on the nomination of Andrew Stevenson, and to authorize copies to be made of the same, and copies of certain papers communicated to the Senate.

The Senate proceeded to consider the motion.

On motion, by Mr. Forsyth, to amend the same by striking out the words "the letter of Thomas Ritchie to Andrew Stevenson; the letter of William B. Lewis, with the extracts from Thomas Ritchie's letters, therein inclosed."

On motion by Mr. Forsyth,

A further amendment having been proposed and adopted, the motion was agreed to as follows:

Ordered, That the injunction of secrecy be removed from the message of the President of the 13th of June, instant; the letter of Mr. Livingston thereby communicated; the letter of Thomas Ritchie to Andrew Stevenson; and the letter of William B. Lewis, with the extracts from Thomas Ritchie's letters therein inclosed; which several papers were introduced by one of the Senators from Virginia at the request of Mr. Stevenson; and from the proceedings of the Senate in relation to the nomination of Andrew Stevenson, and that the Secretary be authorized to give copies of the same and extracts from the Journal.

On motion by Mr. Chambers,

Ordered, That the injunction of secrecy be removed from the proceedings of the Senate relating to the nomination of Roger B. Taney and B. F. Butler; and that the Secretary be authorized to give extracts from the Journal.

Mr. Clayton, from the Committee on the Judiciary, to whom was referred the message of this day, nominating Arthur L. Magennis, reported.

The Senate proceeded to consider the message, by unanimous consent; and

Resolved, That they do advise and consent to the appointment of Arthur L. Magennis, agreeably to the nomination.

Mr. Poindexter, from the Committee on Public Lands, to whom was referred the message of the 23d instant, nominating B. Z. Canonge, reported.

Whereupon

Resolved, That the Senate do advise and consent to the appointment of B. Z. Canonge, agreeably to the nomination.

Mr. Webster, from the Committee on Finance, to whom was referred the message of the 29th of May, nominating Edward D. Ingraham, reported.

Whereupon

Resolved, That the Senate do advise and consent to the appointment of Edward D. Ingraham, agreeably to the nomination.
