The following message was received from the President of the United States, by Mr. Donelson, his secretary:
To the Senate of the United States:
I nominate Matthew F. Maury, now a passed midshipman, to be a lieutenant in the Navy, from this date, in place of James Goodrum, deceased.

The message was read.
Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee on Naval Affairs.
The Senate resumed the consideration of the resolution for the ratification of the treaty with the Swiss Confederation; and
On the question to agree to the resolution,
Those who voted in the affirmative are,
Messrs. Benton, Buchanan, Goldsborough, Grundy, Linn, Rives, Robinson, Shepley, Tallmadge, Tipton, Walker, Wall, Webster, Wright.
Those who voted in the negative are,
Messrs. Black, Calhoun, Clay, Crittenden, Ewing of Ills., Ewing of Ohio, Hendricks, Kent, King of Ala., King of Geo., Knight, Leigh, McKean, Mangum, Moore, Naudain, Nicholas, Porter, Prentiss, Preston, Robbins, Southard, White.
So it was
Resolved, That the Senate do not advise and consent to the ratification of the treaty between the United States of America and the Swiss Confederation, concluded at Paris, the sixth of March, one thousand eight hundred and thirty five.
The Senate resumed the consideration of the message nominating officers in the new Regiment of Dragoons; and
Resolved, That they do advise and consent to the appointment Benjamin L. Beall, Thornton Grimsley, Theophilus H. Holmes, Horatio Grooms, Thomas S. Bryant, John Graham, Townsend Dade, Erasmus D. Bullock, Marshall L. Howe, Charles Spalding, James W. Hamilton, and George A. H. Blake, agreeably to their respective nominations.
On the question, Will the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of John F. Lane?

The yeas and nays being desired by one-fifth of the Senators present,

Mr. Ewing, of Ohio, from the Committee on Public Lands, reported on the nomination of Robert Butler.
Whereupon
Resolved, That the Senate do advise and consent to the appointment of Robert Butler, agreeably to the nomination.
