The following messages were received from the President of the United States, by Mr. Donelson, his secretary:

I nominate to the Senate for promotion in the Army of the United States the officers whose names appear on the accompanying list, submitted by the Secretary of War.

Sir: It is known to you that the office of colonel of the 2d Regiment of Artillery is now vacant, and has been so since April, 1822. Without going back to the circumstances which led to this state of things, or to the discrepancies which have grown out of it, I beg leave to suggest the expediency of nominating some person to fill the appointment. An office created by law is vacant, and it would therefore appear proper that the Executive should submit to the Senate the name of some person

to fill such vacancy. With this view, I have the honor to present to you the name of Lieut. Colonel Lindsay, who is the senior lieut. colonel of the Corps of Artillery. The other promotions submitted depend upon the disposition which may be made of the colonel of the 2d Regt. of Artillery.

The messages were severally read.

Ordered, That the messages of this day nominating to promotions and appointments in the Army, together with the message of the 8th nominating Edmund French and others, and the message of the 19th December nominating Charles H. Smith, be severally referred to the Committee on Military Affairs.

The Senate resumed the consideration of the message of the 7th December nominating David Porter and others.

Resolved, That the Senate do advise and consent to the appointment of Levi Woodbury and Roger Brooke Taney, agreeably to their respective nominations.

Ordered, That the nominations of Edward Livingston, Martin Van Buren, Aaron Vail, and Louis McLane be referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations.

Ordered, That the nomination of Lewis Cass be referred to the Committee on Indian Affairs.
