The following messages were received from the President of the United States, by Mr. Walker, his secretary:

To the Senate of the United States:

I nominate Pierre Auguste Bertrand to be melter and refiner of the branch mint of the United States at New Orleans, in the place of John L. Riddel, removed.

To the Senate of the United States:

I nominate John Gardner to be register of the land office at Winamac, in the State of Indiana, from and after the 28th of December, 1848, when his present commission will expire.

Lunsford R. Noell to be receiver of public moneys for the district of land subject to sale at Danville, in the State of Illinois, from and after the 28th of December, 1848, when his present commission will expire.
