Letter from William Blackwood & Sons, publisher, addressed to the Editor of The Times, dated June 4, [1859] denying that a Mr. Liggins was the author of Scenes from Clerical Life (1858) and Adam Bede (1859). This was supported by an additional letter from the author, George Eliot (1819-1880), pseudonym of Mary Ann (or Marian) Evans.
