Charles Blondin (1824-1897), real name Jean Francois Gravelet, was a French acrobat and tightrope walker. In 1859 he crossed the Niagara Falls on a tightrope in five minutes. Dodgson saw him perform at Oxford in July 1862 during his tour of the United Kingdom.
