Amateur performance at the Adelphi Theatre. [Illustration].

CREATED/PUBLISHED

NOTES
A Sheep in Wolf's Clothing was a one-act historical play by Tom Taylor. Dodgson first saw a performance at the Olympic Theatre, London, on April 22, 1857. This, however, was a benefit performance in aid of the family of the artist C. H. Bennett (see below). The four characters shown are Colonel Kinke (Mark Lemon), Jasper Carew (Tom Taylor), his wife (Kate Terry), and the child (Florence Terry). Dodgson saw the performance on May 11 and noted in his diary: "A little before 2 I went to the Adelphi for the amateur performance, which was a great treat.... After the first piece I went round to the Terry party, who were in the stage-box, and met Mrs. Terry, Miss Kate, Mrs. Watts, Polly and Flo, as well as Mr. Taylor, and Mr. Lewis (Miss Terry's intended) to whom I was introduced. I staid with them through the Glees and Madrigals, and the Sheep in Wolf's Clothing, which was acted by Tom Taylor 'Jasper Carew,' Mark Lemon 'Colonel Kinke,' Shirley Brooks the locksmith, Burnand the servant, Tenniel 'Colonel Churchill.' Miss Terry, Mrs. Watts, and Flo all appeared, all three as good as ever. Tom Taylor was good, but a little tame. Mark Lemon first rate. Burnand good (he showed some presence of mind, when he could not open the door to admit Kinke, while the locksmith was examining the cupboard, in extemporising 'Simon Zoyland, bring thy tools here and open this door!'). Tenniel seemed nervous, and was hardly audible. Miss Terry was, in parts, very pathetic, and reduced poor Polly to floods of tears."
