Formula of plane trigonometry.

CREATED/PUBLISHED
London, England: Athenaeum, no. 1761, July 27, 1861

NOTES
This is a positive review of Dodgson's pamphlet entitled The Formula of Plane Trigonometry (1861). Dodgson wrote it to support the undergraduates at Oxford reading mathematics. In the pamphlet, Dodgson invented new symbols to represent the trigonometrical functions such as sine and cosine. These symbols, briefer than those in use today, have the added advantage of explaining their significance within a co-ordinate system. Nevertheless, they were not adopted within the mathematical community. The reviewer concentrated his comments on the new symbols, but sat on the fence when it came to accepting the changes proposed by Dodgson.
