Great fight between "Bill Money," and M. M., or "The Merry Miller."
CREATED/PUBLISHED
Oxford Field, Between May and December 1860
NOTES
This veiled article concerns a University dispute involving Monier Monier-Williams (1819-1899) MA Balliol College - Bill Money, and Friedrich Max Müller (1823-1900), PhD Leipzig, Hon. MA Christ Church, Taylorian professor of modern European languages 1854-68 - the Merry Miller. In May 1860, Horace Hayman Wilson, professor of Sanskrit at Oxford died. Max Müller's claim for the chair was strong, both on ability and achievement, but his broad religious views and the fact that he was a foreigner counted against him, and Monier-Williams took the chair, supported by many clerical members of convocation. The election took place on December 7, 1860, and 803 votes were cast for Monier-Williams and 610 for Max Müller.
