Arthur Penrhyn Stanley (1815-1881), Dean of Westminster from 1863, chaired the meeting. The main speakers included Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), a distinguished Nonconformist minister, and Frederick Temple (1821-1902), social reformer, headmaster of Rugby School 1857-1869, and later Archbishop of Canterbury.
