Greek professorship at Oxford.

CREATED/PUBLISHED
c. January 24, 1862, possibly February 15, 1862

NOTES
Dodgson's name does not appear in the list of subscribers to give Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893) the sum of £2000 to make up for his low salary (£40 per annum) as Professor of Greek at Oxford. Jowett had been the professor since 1855. Dodgson disagreed with Jowett's religious views, and he was also aware that the funding for the Regius professorship came from income generated by his own college, Christ Church. Hence, it seems likely that he did not approve of the salary increase.
