NOTES
A review of Our American Cousin, dramatised by Dodgson's friend Tom Taylor (1817-1880), with a noted performance by Edward Askew Sothern (1826-1881). Although born in Liverpool, Sothern made his reputation as an actor in the United States. He returned to England in 1861 and was an over-night success playing the role of Lord Dundreary in Our American Cousin. Dodgson's diaries are missing for 1861, so we cannot be sure if he saw the play, but it is highly likely that he did. We know that he saw Sothern perform in the sequel, Lord Dundreary Married and Done For, on June 27, 1866.
