Mr. Yates's inventions.
CREATED/PUBLISHED
Standard?, December 9, 1862
NOTES
Performance by Edmund Hodgson Yates (1831-1894) and Harold Power (who was the father of Tyrone Power (1869-1931), the film star) in an entertainment called "Invitations." Dodgson recorded in his diary for October 28, 1862: "Heard from Mr. Yates about the song of 'Miss Jones' which I sent him (it is a medley-song, which I composed when last at Croft, with the help of Margaret, Henrietta etc., the tunes running into each other). He likes it, and is going to put it into the 'entertainment' which he and a Mr. Power (son of the Irish actor, and a comic singer), are to perform at the Egyptian Hall." Dodgson saw the performance on December 22, and noted in his diary: "Put up at the Great Northern Hotel, and went to the Egyptian Hall to see Mr. Yates' 'Invitations.' Far the best thing of the evening is Mr. Harold Power's imitations of Buckstone, Webster, Kean, Bedford, and Boucicault. 'Miss Jones' is not yet introduced." It is not clear whether Dodgson's medley-song was ever performed.
