NOTES
Kate Terry, Ellen's sister, retired from the stage in October 1867, in order to marry Arthur James Lewis (1844-1924). The theatre-going public keenly felt her retirement, including Dodgson. He had watched her stage-career with interest, and he knew her and the Terry family well.
