NOTES
Clare Hepworth was the soprano in a performance of The Messiah at Exeter Hall, and Dodgson was in the audience. He noted in his diary for December 12, 1856: "Went to Exeter Hall to hear the Messiah. Mrs. Clare Hepworth, who had the treble part, was too unwell to go through it, and a Miss Louisa Vinning finished it. The change was decidedly for the better, as her voice is delicious: it was stated to be the first time she had sung a solo in public." This event brought Louisa Vinning prominently to notice and she continued to have a successful singing career until she married Mr. J. S. C. Heywood and retired from the concert stage.
