Losing Jobs to Mechanization
Author/Creator
Narrator: Smart, Stanley
Vennum, Thomas, Jr., interviewer.
Created/Published
July 27,1978
Notes
Stanley Smart, a Northern Paiute Indian, who worked on the 96 Ranch in the past, reminisces about crews of Indian workers stacking hay who have since been replaced by mechanization.
In this selection, worker Stanley Smart explains how the reduced use of labor on his reservation's hayfields, as well as on nearby ranches, has made it harder to find work. Les offers the rancher's perspective on the need to reduce labor and increase mechanization in "Reducing the Need for Labor on the 96 Ranch."
The men share a certain ambivalence about this change. Although Les speaks of the necessity for mechanization, his lovingly made film about the hay derrick days points to his affection for the older form of work. Although Smart does not explicitly say so, one may assume that his musings about lost jobs are mitigated by memories of hot, dusty hours on top of a haystack.
