Notes

Tex Northrup, a Northern Paiute Indian, who has worked on the 96 Ranch for over a decade, reminisces about working for Les Stewart.
The relationship between worker and boss can be trying for anyone, and when the two come from different cultures, the matter is especially difficult. In this selection, Tex Northrup delineates his working relationship with Les Stewart. Since Northrup, an Indian, is talking to a white outsider about his white employer, his circumspection and positive emphasis are easily understood. Northrup, like most Northern Paiutes, is fully bilingual. This can be taken as a sign of his continuing loyalty to native traditions and his adaptation to bicultural circumstances. One evening, during a break in our filming at the Bradshaw Camp, Northrup turned to me and spontaneously extolled buckaroo work. Every time one began to tire of some phase of the work, he said, the season changed and the tasks changed with it. He said this suited him perfectly.
