Notes
Martha Arriola, who worked on the 96 Ranch as a cook in the 1930s, compares meals and mealtimes on the farm in her native Germany with those on the ranches in Paradise Valley.
Martha Arriola worked as the ranch cook during the 1930s. As noted in "To America from Germany," she prepared food for a crew ranging in size from twenty to forty. Her comparison of meals and mealtimes in rural north Germany and Paradise Valley is fascinating; no doubt German customs have changed as much as American ones in the intervening years.
