Notes
Les Stewart talks about preparing and storing food at the line camps, about the grub box, and cooking over an open fire; includes Les' recipe for Russian Pie. Recorded in a barn on the 96 Ranch.
Les said that he liked to have someone else cook on the drive and that he could occasionally find a suitable person. He played this role himself on the two drives we accompanied, however, and seemed so devoted to the task that it is hard not to imagine him as permanent chef. This selection concerns the logistics of moving food, especially meat and other perishables, in areas where no refrigeration is available. It also includes Les's recipe for Russian pie and a discussion of the grub box. The account points to the inseparability of cowboy work and cowboy life.
