After the herd is gathered, the cattle are driven back to the home ranch by the 96 Ranch crew who stay at various line camps along the way, including Bradshaw Camp, Hartscrabble Camp, and Black Ridge Camp.
On the first day of the trail drive back to the home ranch, the buckaroos set out from their original base at the Bradshaw Camp, pick up the herd in the holding area near the Cold Springs Camp, and drive the cattle about seven miles east to the Black Ridge Camp. Their route takes them to the watershed of the North Fork of the Little Humboldt. On the second day, the herd covers another seven or eight miles to the Hartscrabble Camp. This trail crosses back into the Martin Creek watershed, following a branch of the creek down Charlie Young Canyon most of the way to Hartscrabble. The final leg follows Martin Creek fourteen miles down to the valley. In this video, the sequence of locations has been rearranged for the sake of film narrative. The first scenes depict the arrival of the herd at Black Ridge. The horse shoeing was filmed at the Bradshaw Camp. Clay Taylor, Mel Winslow, and Henry Taylor are shown washing at Hartscrabble Camp. The meal and the frisbee game between Myron Smart and Fred Stewart took place in front of the Bradshaw Cabin. The daybreak shots show the herd leaving Hartscrabble Camp. Then the herd is seen descending the China Road where Martin Creek enters Paradise Valley. The final lunch of the drive was the only meal not prepared in camp. Marie Stewart rendezvoused with the men near the end of the long incline at the head of the valley, and stood by with sandwiches, Kool-Aid, and coffee.
