Notes
Les Stewart's narration [NV82-CF-R3] recorded on 82/07/07 by Margaret Purser and Carl Fleischhauer, describes the part of Stewart's film, "Mr. Steak: The Story of a Nevada Steer," (ca. 1965) relating to branding, earmarking, inoculating, and wattling.
Les's footage of spring branding resembles our film of autumn branding, video selection <006>. It dramatizes the calf's ordeal, while Les's footage takes a more detached point of view. He does not use as many close-ups and excludes or deemphasizes the surgical procedures of wattling and dehorning. He does provide, however, an exceedingly brief glimpse of castration. He highlights the noon meal and, in his soundtrack commentary, emphasizes buckaroo work. He focuses on the cowboys and not the calf.
This scene has been excerpted from the twelve-minute film "Mr. Steak: The Story of a Nevada Steer," made in ca. 1965. The longer film follows a calf from birth to death, and concludes with scenes of steaks being cooked and eaten. The film affords Les several opportunities to present a rancher's perspective on topics of public interest. Scenes of wildlife on the range, for example, demonstrate the compatibility of grazing with other uses of the land. Shots of a line camp remind audiences not to litter or vandalize. Footage from a slaughterhouse and supermarket calls attention to the sanitary preparation of domestic, as opposed to imported, beef.
This film has not been reedited.
