Notes
Les Stewart sketches the ketch lot on the 96 Ranch used for parting cattle. Cattle enter the ketch lot on the 96 Ranch at the end of the roundup and trail drive.
The roundup and drive ends when the cattle pass through the gate onto the ranch. Before reaching the gate, the cattle have been marshaled into single file. The gate opens into the "ketch lot," an arrangement of fences where riders can sort steers and strays from the rest of the herd. The lot reduces the amount of work performed at the parting operation, which can be viewed in video selections <004> and <014>.
The first part of this video consists of Les's schematic for the ketch lot, while the second presents eye-level film footage of the operation. It is hard to comprehend the activity from the ground, although the cries of "Ninety-Six steer" and "Circle A" (a neighbor's brand) provide some clues.
