Hildegard Steerstedter (later Hildegard Thompson) was born January 13, 1901 in DePauw, Indiana. She taught in Harrison County, Ind., schools from 1921-1930; was a teacher and textbook writer with the Bureau of Educucation in the Philippine Islands, 1931-1936; and served in various positions relating to education, including chief of Bureau of Education with the U.S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs between 1937 and 1965. She died in 1983.
The papers of Hildegard Thompson (1901-1983) span the years 1951-1974 and consist of book drafts, articles, correspondence, photographs, and printed matter, all concerning American Indian education, especially Navajo schools, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The collection is arranged alphabetically by subject or type of material and chronologically therein.
