Scope and Content Note

The papers of Wilhelmus Bogart Bryan (1854-1938) span the years 1789-1888 and consist of notes and handwritten extracts by Bryan of newspaper articles published in the District of Columbia and elsewhere concerning the history of the federal seat of government. Bryan, an historian and author, compiled the extracts while researching his work, A History of the National Capital (New York: The MacMillan Company, 1914 [vol. 1] and 1916 [vol. 2]). The extracts were arranged by Bryan by date, not by subject, in keeping with his chronological treatment of Washington’s history.

Washington, D.C., newspapers extracted include the Alexandria Advertiser, Alexandria Gazette, Centinel [sic] of Liberty, Columbian Chronicle , Columbian Mirror , Evening Star, Federal Republican, Gazette of the United States, Georgetown Weekly Ledger, Impartial Observer, National Intelligencer, Pawtomack Packet, The Times, Washington Advertiser, and Washington Gazette. The Alexandria newspapers excerpted were published in what was then the District of Columbia. In addition, Bryan extracted extensively the Baltimore Sun.
