The papers of Zane Grey, author, were given to the Library of Congress by his wife in 1953-1954. Items were transferred to the collection from the Copyright Office of the Library in 1966. Additional material was purchased in 1995.
The collection was organized circa 1955 and expanded in 1997. The finding aid was revised with the addition of more material in 2009.
The status of copyright in the unpublished writings of Zane Grey is governed by the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, U.S.C.).

The papers of Zane Grey (1872-1939) span the years circa 1912-circa 1939 and consist largely of pencil drafts of Western novels, including Arizona Ames, Fighting Caravans, Forlorn River The Lost Wagon Train, Raiders of the Spanish Peaks, The U.P. Trail, and Wild Horse Mesa. Included in the collection are playscripts submitted for copyright protection by Grey, a poem in his honor by Ivy Houtz Woolley, and an addition of a few letters by Grey.
