- The title of this unique chart gives only a hint. This 6/8 twelve-bar modal tune explores the concept from several compositional perspectives. Following the mode and mood setting introduction, a "swung sixteenth" 12-bar melody in the saxes opens the chart, contrasting then with a ten-bar B section in the brass. Solo changes are modal and quite simple, but fun to play on, and are backed with some interest-creating "modal clusters." Some big band modal polyphony follows the solo section, then a key change to the parallel major brings the chart to a full chorus that leads to its own suspension. Following a return to the B section, it feels like it's time to close, but a unique drum solo then slowly emerges, joined by ever-thickening horn textures into a full closing that ultimately leaves the saxes...suspended. Grade 4. 6/8 modal blues. A Dorian and A Major. Trumpet to written C#.
