- Summary
- "Searching for Dad - The Odyssey" began its life as a sonata for piano on the night that I learnt of my dad's passing. For several years the piece remained a sonata, conveying powerful emotions of what I perceived as an odyssey, primarily through notes played at the piano. During a challenging winter experience, I was moved to write lyrics to the melody of "Searching for Dad." Shortly afterward, I began to extend the form and to develop the orchestration. As I worked on the parts for various instruments, the melody invited the emotions onto an odyssey in other forms of rhythm and harmony. Finally, I arrived at a place on the musical odyssey that I knew was the total experience. "Searching for Dad--the Odyssey Orchestration" and Searching for Dad--the Odyssey Narrated" had arrived for their soothing, healing, inspirational functions on Earth. (Glenwood Lawrence).
