- Summary
- "Eidolons" is a tribute to the memory and style of the composer Johannes Brahms, and stands in a long -- line of works extending from Couperin's "apotheoses" of Lully and Corelli to Ravel's Le tombeau de -- Couperin and beyond. It is heroic and symphonic in scope, acknowledging Brahms's steadfast advocacy] -- tonal art music in an age of sweeping, often iconoclastic change, and his important contributions to the -- preservation of earlier masterworks, including an edition of the oeuvre of François Couperin. -- Cast in classical sonata-allegro form, the exposition opens with a solemn theme in G Minor of -- distinctively triadic construction. After a brief, powerfully agitated transition, a gently lyrical theme -- enters in B-flat Major, followed by a graceful, concise closing theme in the same key. After the -- exposition is repeated, the development begins in G Major, this time inverting the original triadic -- material. The agitated transitional material of the exposition is then variously reintroduced, with -- considerable emphasis on melodic and rhythmic motives to achieve an expansive, intensely dramatic -- effect. At the recapitulation, the original theme appears in a new guise, and the ensuing transition now -- leads to the parallel key of G Major. The lyrical second theme is this time heard in E-flat Major, but -- mysteriously turns back towards G Major before a quiet but motivically animated coda brings the movement to a close.
