- Summary
- The "Sonata for Modern Life" is one of my more unusual works. Originally for bass clarinet and piano, it was commissioned by one of the most talented bass clarinet players I have ever heard. Zach Abramovitz approached me and asked me to write a challenging duet piece for him to premier. I knew I had enormous freedom to write challenging music for the performer. I decided to make the work very challenging, but not so difficult that it couldn't be performed often. I decided to focus on rhythmic intensity and also on making full use of the instrument range. The result was a three-movement sonata that was premiered at the University of Kansas in the spring of 2006.The title and music came from my own experiences of traveling abroad from a time when I was questioning a lot of the things that seem accepted about our modern Western culture. This 1st movement reflects on the obsession in Western society to acquire material possessions. Movement 2 is about the anxiety, and the 3rd movement is based on the constant hurry. While I admit it is difficult to project these things in music, these were the issues of modern society I was thinking about when I wrote these notes.Level: grade 4-5 (advanced) Duration: About 12 minutes.
