- Summary
- The repertoire of violin and viola duets is neither vast, nor celebrated at this time. It mainly consists of Classical -- works by Pleyel, Stamitz, Rolla, and some others. A few Romantic composers added their own contributions, -- and a small scattering of modern works exist. From Baroque music, we have virtually none (beyond a well -- known arrangement of a Handel keyboard work). I hope to begin changing that with this offering. -- For many years I have had the thrill of performing in a concert hall that also houses one of the greatest collections -- of antique harpsichords. There I have heard the music of Rameau, Couperin, Forqueray, and the others in -- these volumes, and wished I could play some of their beautiful harpsichord music on my own instrument.This -- repertoire has a sensuality, and a richness that is almost unique. At the same time, there is so much variety and -- scope. I tried to create an opportunity for the violin and viola to converse quite closely -to be the right and left -- hands of a single being. A lofty goal, but who makes art aiming for mediocrity? -- These duets were created for the concert stage, but will also be of use, I hope, in more intimate situations among -- friends. Please enjoy them often, and feel free to write me if there are other pieces you would hope to play.
