- Abstract
- A musical play in three acts. Book and lyrics by Otto Harbach and Oscar Hammerstein II. Music by Herbert Stothart and Vincent Youmans. Book staged by Oscar Eagle. Dances and ensembles by Dave Bennett. Opened 7 February 1923 at the Casino Theatre and closed 29 March 1924 after 4778 performances. Youmans' tune "Bambalina" which was introduced in Wildflower and danced by Edith Day and the Ensemble, became Eddie Rector's specialty number in Dixie to Broadway. "The Bambalina" a traveling time step routine performed in top hat and tails -- everything in pearl gray"-- became Eddie Rector's more enduring tap routines. Rector began with a waltz clog, and proceeded to move elegantly across the stage and back. (Norton 1923.05)
